A Simplified and Traditional Chinese converter built for learners

Most converters give you a block of text and leave you to guess what happened. This one shows its work. Every changed character is highlighted, so you can see how 发 becomes 發 and 软件 becomes 軟體. Choose Taiwan, Hong Kong or Mainland to switch the vocabulary rules, because the two Traditional standards do not use identical words. When one Simplified character maps to several Traditional ones, a small note appears right under it so you can decide from context. Conversion happens in your browser, and your text is never uploaded or stored.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Simplified-to-Traditional conversion often inaccurate?

Simplification merged several Traditional characters into one. 发 can be 髮 (hair) or 發 (to send), and 后 can be 後 (after) or 后 (queen). A tool has to guess from nearby words. Going from Traditional to Simplified is far more reliable because it only merges characters.

What is the difference between Taiwan and Hong Kong Traditional Chinese?

The characters are mostly the same, with a few differences in standard forms. The bigger gap is vocabulary. Software is 軟體 in Taiwan and 軟件 in Hong Kong. Hong Kong writing also leans on Cantonese expressions and English loanwords, while Taiwan follows Mandarin usage.

Is Traditional Chinese just Simplified Chinese with different characters?

No. Besides the character forms, many everyday words differ by region. A character-only swap can produce text that is readable but sounds foreign to a native reader. That is why this tool lets you choose a regional vocabulary set.

Should I learn Simplified or Traditional?

Choose by where you will use Chinese. Traditional is standard in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Simplified is standard in mainland China, Singapore and Malaysia. Many learners pick one to write and learn to read the other.

What do the highlights and ⚠ notes mean?

Blue highlights mark characters that changed. Teal highlights mark words swapped for regional vocabulary. An amber ⚠ note appears under a character with more than one possible form, so you can check it against context.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, saved, or logged.

Is this converter free?

Yes. Free forever, no signup, no limits. Your text never leaves your browser.
